Game Day Report – August 24/13

The Drayton Valley Thunder took the second game of a 2 game home stand versus the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. Saturday night showed more of a veteran lineup from head coach Mike Mueller and it showed. The boys came hard at the young Oil Barons squad, throwing everything they had at both Barons netminders.
The Thunder got off to the early start on the power play with a nice tic-tac-toe play, finished off by rookie Braden Jakubowski. The second period was full of action as the Thunder scored twice to put them up 3-0 until a seeing eye shot got past young goalie Billy Gorn.
The game was capped off by Thunder veteran Ty Bettac getting into a fight with only 3 minutes remaining as the Oil Barons tried to capture any energy they could heading into their next pre-season game on August 29th.
Stand out rookie Brett Smythe was the Thunder's player of the game. The youngster had 2 assists in the winning cause and will definitely push for a spot on the roster come September.
The Thunder will now face the Spruce Grove Saints on Monday August 26th, 7:30pm at the Omniplex.
