Drayton Valley Thunder – The Drayton Valley Thunder is pleased to announce they have acquired brother duo Zach and Jake Aston for the 2018/19 season.
Zach Aston, a ‘98 defenseman from St. Albert, Alberta has played 2 seasons and 110 games with the Bonnyville Pontiacs. With the Pontiacs, Zach registered 4 goals and 14 assists within 58 games, giving him a total of 18 points to finish off the 2017-18 season. He was part of a player trade that sends Marc-Antoine Benoit to the Pontiacs. Zach is looking forward to this opportunity for him to be a leader and a “go-to” guy for the Thunder. He can play in all situations and brings some intensity and grit to the back end. He is excited to work with the new Head Coach Eric Thurston and the rest of the coaching staff and is thrilled to get the chance to play along side his younger brother.
“Zach is a great addition to the Drayton Valley Thunder. Not only will his character and leadership be valuable on the ice, off the ice, he will set the tone for our community involvement. He is another important part of creating a winning culture for the Thunder program” said new Head Coach and General Manager, Eric Thurston. “He will play against the top lines and will be a steady and solid defensive anchor for the team.”
Younger brother Jake Aston, a 5’11” 2000 born forward, will be joining the AJHL for the first time after having played 2 seasons with the Midget AAA Knights of Columbus Pats. In the 2017-18 season, Jake was 0.78 points a game scoring 11 goals and 15 assists. He was almost a point a game during playoffs, putting up 12 points in 13 games. He is ready to play at the next level, and looks forward to helping make the team successful.
“Jake plays smart hockey and really thinks the game,” said Coach Thurston. “He is a 200 foot hockey player who excels in both defense and offence zones. He will be money for big games, and knows how to step it up when the pressure is on.”
