Drayton Valley Thunder Announce Billy Hooson as Team Captain
Drayton Valley, AB – July 18, 2025 – The Drayton Valley Thunder are proud to announce that veteran defenseman Billy Hooson has been named the team’s new captain for the upcoming 2025-2026 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season.
Hooson, a native of Didsbury, Alberta, is entering his second season with the Thunder after arriving via trade from the Calgary Canucks during the 2024-25 season. Billy consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and a strong work ethic both on and off the ice last season. His commitment to the team and his strong presence in the dressing room make him the obvious choice to lead the Thunder this season under a new vision of accountability.
Hooson played in 51 games for the Drayton Valley Thunder, recording 2 goals, 14 assists, and 16 points, along with 110 penalty minutes last season.
General Manager and Head Coach Jeff Truitt expressed his enthusiasm for Hooson’s appointment: “Billy embodies everything we look for in a leader. He’s a tireless worker, commands respect and accountability from his teammates, and consistently puts the team first. His character and experience as an AJHL champion will be invaluable as we build a new culture this season. We’re incredibly confident in his ability to lead the Thunder.”
Upon receiving the captaincy, Hooson shared his excitement: “It’s an incredible honor to be named captain of the Drayton Valley Thunder. I’ve grown so much as a player and person here, and I’m truly grateful for the trust that Coach Truitt is placing in me. I’m excited to lead this group of talented players and work towards bringing a championship to Drayton Valley.”
The Drayton Valley Thunder Training Camp begins August 23rd, with the season starting September 19th at home against the Olds Grizzlys.
