Derek Wiest Becomes Head Scout Southern Alberta
Derek Wiest will resign his position as Assistant Coach with the Drayton Valley Thunder, and become the Head Scout for Southern Alberta effective August 1, 2018. Recruitment of a new Assistant Coach will commence immediately for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Derek will recruit and head up the Southern Alberta scouting team and looks forward to continuing his part in creating a winning tradition in Drayton Valley. “It was the hardest decision I have made in a while, said Wiest, I love the Thunder and working with the players to support them to develop as men and as athletes. During my time as assistant Coach in Drayton, I had such a great opportunity to grow as a coach and I am sincerely grateful to the Owners and Board for such a great opportunity and for all their support. The decision really boiled down to putting my young family first and putting my coaching career on the back burner for a while. We are expecting our third child any day now, and I had a job fall into my lap with Western Tractor 5 min from my house. I look forward to continuing to work with Eric Thurston in my new role as Head Scout. Eric is an incredible Coach, and a man of integrity, with a proven track record of building winning cultures. I can’t wait for the upcoming season to continue to be a part of the major changes he has in store for the team.”
Eric Thurston said “to be blunt, it felt a bit like getting punched in the gut. Derek is a good and developing coach who has played a key role with our young athletes however, anytime someone makes a decision to put their family first, above their own personal goals, I am going to support that. Derek will continue to be part of our Thunder family and already the interest in the Assistant Coach position is very high.”
The Thunder are looking forward to an exciting season with a dynamic skilled team of returning players, young talent and some recently acquired seasoned leadership.
